This high-backed walnut chair is an extremely rare piece of furniture from the French Renaissance due to its structure. Here, balusters and molded panels set into the frame represent a simple and refined decoration.<\/p>\n

This chair perfectly demonstrates the modifications made by the Second Renaissance to the general architecture of this type of chair.<\/p>\n

– The armrests, now powerful and independent, supported by balusters, are crooked at their ends.<\/p>\n

– The frame uprights no longer provide a functional structure for the chair.<\/p>\n

Indeed, the base uprights are an integral part of the chest, while the backrest uses its architecture for decorative purposes, the bulk of which is made of narrow molded panels set into the frame.<\/p>\n

This type of panel is highly representative of the stylistic purity characteristic of the Henri II period.<\/p>\n
