Nevertheless, she managed to receive instruction from a priest, from whom she was baptized. According to legend, to demonstrate her faith, she pierced a third window in the tower, symbolizing the Holy Trinity.

When her father learned of her conversion, he threatened her with his sword. She managed to escape before being betrayed by a shepherd. She was then thrown into prison, and despite the atrocious tortures inflicted upon her, she refused to renounce her faith and to marry a pagan. In the end, her father took her to the top of a mountain and beheaded her. After committing this heinous act, he was struck by lightning and nothing remained of him – a divine punishment.

The cult of Saint Barbara became popular in the West from the 13th century onward thanks to The Golden Legend by Jacobus de Voragine. It was from the 15th century that it fully developed.

The iconography presented here recalls The Golden Legend, according to which Saint Barbara herself pierced three windows into the walls of her tower, which served as her prison, symbolizing her faith in the Holy Trinity.

Carved in sandstone and polychromed, the saint is shown standing and leaning against the roof of her tower.

Her face bears a gentle expression, with a high and open forehead, lightly indicated brow ridges, almond-shaped eyes delicately outlined, and a small mouth. Her facial features are as fine as they are delicate.

Her loose hair falls in long, wavy strands over her shoulders.

She is dressed in a simple gown, fitted at the waist and covered with an open cloak that falls forward like an apron. The drapery, vigorous, graphic, and stylized, features large, deeply carved, broken folds, typically characteristic of the 15th century.

In her right hand, with long slender fingers, she holds an open Bible, which she reads attentively with her eyes cast downward.

Her face, with its serene grace and gentle appearance, fits well within the tradition of the Late Gothic style. A strong emotional power emerges from this sculpture, which is powerfully modeled with simplicity. Particularly interesting due to the originality and rarity of its iconography, it reflects the work of a skilled sculptor who succeeded in conveying the softness of Saint Barbara’s features.

[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row]

BEAUTIFUL SANDSTONE SCULPTURE DEPICTING SAINT BARBARA BESIDE THE TOWER

ORIGIN : FRANCHE-COMTÉ REGION – EASTERN FRANCE

PERIOD : LATE 15th, EARLY 16th CENTURY

Height : 66 cm

Width : 31 cm

Depth : 16 cm

Sandstone, good remains of polychromy

Very good state of preservation

[dt_button size="small" style="default" animation="none" color_mode="default" icon="" icon_align="left" color="" link="mailto:gabrielle-laroche@wanadoo.fr?subject=51_SAINTE_BARBE_AUPRÈS_DE_SA_TOUR_ANG" target_blank="true"]DEMANDE D’INFORMATIONS[/dt_button]

Retour aux sculptures

[35

post-12912","product","type-product","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","product_cat-sculptures-en","description-off","first","instock","shipping-taxable","product-type-simple
["GET
