Description
This Virgin of Calvary is fully sculpted to portray Mary’s tenderness. She is exactly what we would expect from this region and period.
Her face is wrapped in a traditional cloth. Her regard soft and reflective, not letting her grief be known nor prevent her loyalty to prayer.
Her dress follows the lines of her body and her overcoat is held tightly by her left arm, cascading into circular yet natural folds.
Her hands are joined in prayer at her chest, with delicate and long fingers.
The sculptor knew the qualities of the limewood, a very thin and tender wood, would permit this level of fluidity and softness.
