Description
Very primitive in its composition, owing to its early date – almost as if born from a single log of wood – this Virgin in Majesty, known as the « Sedes Sapientiae », is typical of its place of creation. Romanesque in period, it is carved in high relief and retains part of its original polychromy and gilding.
Upright in stance and strongly vertical, she presents a youthful face with gentle yet well-defined features. She hints at a slight smile and carries the Blessing Child on her left knee. As Queen of Heaven, a broad crown encircles her head.
Pleasing in appearance and small in scale, she was likely intended to be placed in a chapel for purposes of private devotion.
