Description
The base is composed of two separate uprights with curved contours, joined by a molded stretcher.
The octagonal seat rests on a wide apron that is openwork at its inner center.
The harmoniously carved scroll-shaped backrest depicts a fleur-de-lis and fits into the seat through a wide rectangular slot.
The scabella chair (sgabello in Italian) was the quintessential everyday seat during the Renaissance. The cabinetmaker who created this fine set of sgabelli clearly intended to evoke the fleur-de-lis, the emblem of the city of Florence.
