Description

This beautiful Romanesque carved wood piece depicts the head of a sleeping Christ with a peaceful, serene face, showing no trace of suffering.

The elongated face, with its fine features and closed eyelids, presents prominent cheekbones, a straight and still angular narrow nose, and thin lips.

The drooping moustache merges into the beard. Both are rendered in thin, shallow, highly stylized waves, delicately carved.

A braided crown of thorns encircles his head and encloses his hair.

This beautiful face, softly modeled, is that of a 12th-century Christ.
