Description

The enthroned Madonna reflects her role as Queen of Heaven. She is depicted from the front with an air of austere tranquillity, deeply engaged in solemn religious thoughts. The Virgin’s elongated features and curvilinear veil are similar to a number of works from northern Spain in the Rioja region ( Español and Yarza, loc. cit.). The slightly disconcerted, soft and expressive ovoid faces of the Virgin and Christ and the round neckline are also evident in other works from the region in the Museo de Historia in Barcelona ( Sanpere, loc. cit ) and also in works from Burgos and Zamora in the west (Tejada, he.).
