Description
About the Artist :
Born in Lisbon, in 1966, Mónica Machado has lived and worked in Paris since 1981, where she graduated in Fine Arts at the Ecole National des Beaux Arts, in 1992. Starting from the gathering of objects made of cloth and ceramic pieces, in mosaic or glass, Mónica Machado deconstructs the materials and explores them in layers and collages, alluding to themes such as nature, religion and everyday lite. Some pieces include lighting which, combined with the bright colour and the glow of the materials, reinforces the idea that Mónica Machado’s work comprehends a fantastical dimension.
Comments :
The figure was created from live models and shaped using several male and female casts.
The body is made of synthetic rock plaster bandages, tow, resin, and fiberglass.
The drapery and hair are composed of cut edges of plates; some pieces reconstitute the original border design of the plate.
The fragments of leaves, flower petals, thorns… in ceramic are debris from funerary wreaths gathered over the course of life. .
The work also incorporates micro-pebbles—green, red, and gold—Vallauris enamels, as well as beads and lace.
The statuettes and angels evoke Sacred Art.
The body is painted with a mixture of “pink-grey” vinyl emulsion and “antique white” ceramic paint, then given a patina using various techniques.
Adhesives: Silicone and cléocol.
