Description

The Virgin, sculpted in the round, with her slender and proud silhouette, is presented standing. Her face is framed by a finely pleated and tight guimpe, highlighting her pretty delicate face. The Virgin’s very gentle face reveals a delicate nose, prominent cheekbones, a small well-formed chin, and well-arched eyebrows.

She is dressed in a high-waisted red gown and a blue coat trimmed with gold, with the folds returning to the front. Two small red shoes appear under the long, fine, and expressive pleats of her flowing garments. The coat that covers her head, placing the top of her forehead in shadow, accentuates the sense of contemplation of this Virgin of Calvary.

Completely polychromed, the red of the gown reveals a refined silver background. The overall effect brings softness and elegance to this Virgin of Calvary, who was a counterpart to Saint John the Evangelist in a crucifixion scene.
